Smoke vents or smoke hatches as they are also called operate on pneumatic or electrically operated actuators with either manual pressing of button by personnel in case of fire or with integration with the BMS system of the plant whichever applicable. They work on the Archimedes principle that warm air rises (smoke) and in the case of a fire most deaths or incidents occur by smoke more than the actual fire. That is why the evacuation of smoke is required and smoke vents do just that. They are constructed of aluminum framing with polycarbonate sheet acting also as a facade to provide natural light with either pneumatic cylinders or electrical actuators.
